How to solve: Cognitive Ability
What this category tests
Measures how you perform across a mixed battery of reasoning formats in one timed run — matrix pattern completion, number series, verbal analogies, logical deduction, and spatial visualization — the same combined format used by pre-employment cognitive-ability tests like TestGorilla, Criteria's CCAT, and SHL's general ability assessments.
Where this typology comes from
Combined cognitive-ability batteries became standard in hiring after research (starting with the U.S. Employment Service's General Aptitude Test Battery in the 1940s, and refined by decades of industrial-organizational psychology research since) consistently found that a general reasoning composite predicts job performance better than any single narrow skill test — which is why modern platforms bundle several formats into one timed score instead of testing them separately.
How to approach it
Since there's no going back once you move on, triage as you go: if a question isn't clicking within a few seconds, take your best guess and move on rather than losing time you'll need for the rest of the battery — a wrong guess costs the same as a skipped question, so guessing is always better than running out of time on later questions. Watch the format change between questions (you'll jump between matrices, series, analogies, deduction, and spatial items) and re-orient quickly rather than staying anchored to the previous question's logic.
Worked example
What number comes next in the series? 3, 6, 12, 24, ___
- 30
- 36
- 48 ✓ Correct answer
- 60
Explanation Each number is double the one before it (x2): 3 -> 6 -> 12 -> 24 -> 48. Options a) and b) both break the pattern by adding instead of multiplying, and d) doubles then adds something extra.
