Wonderlic Test: Format, Score and How to Practice Free
Reviewed: October 2026
The cognitive part of the Wonderlic (now inside Wonderlic Select) has 50 multiple-choice questions in 12 minutes, with no calculator, and you are not expected to finish them all. To prepare, practice short arithmetic, vocabulary, logic and patterns at a fast pace, and avoid getting stuck on any single question.
What the Wonderlic is
Wonderlic is a US hiring-assessment company, known for decades for its short cognitive test. Its current hiring product is Wonderlic Select, which combines three parts: a timed cognitive test, a motivational interests questionnaire and a personality questionnaire.
Keep in mind that other versions exist, such as a shorter one of about 30 items in 8 minutes used in admissions. If your process uses a variant, your invitation will say so.
Format, timing and scoring
Details from Wonderlic's candidate FAQ page and product description.
- Cognitive part: 50 questions in 12 minutes; you are not expected to finish them all.
- Questions get harder as you go and mix simple math, basic logic, language comprehension, spatial reasoning and patterns.
- Calculator: not allowed. Wonderlic says only a few questions involve calculations and that using one would cost you time.
- Full Wonderlic Select: about 35 minutes in total; the motivational (58 items) and personality (150 items) parts have no time limit.
- Scoring: a proprietary algorithm evaluates your response pattern against the demands of the job. There is no universal pass or fail, and candidates receive a feedback report, not a cognitive number.
What it measures
It is a general cognitive ability test, geared to how quickly you learn and solve new problems. It is not a job-knowledge test or an IQ measurement.
- Arithmetic and quantitative reasoning with short word problems.
- Vocabulary, analogies and language comprehension.
- Logic and brief deductive reasoning.
- Patterns and spatial relationships.
How to practice here
This app offers exercises in a style inspired by general cognitive tests and a timed mock exam. They are not Wonderlic questions.
- Cognitive ability: a varied mix, the closest to the pace of a short test.
- Quantitative aptitude: mental arithmetic and word problems without a calculator.
- Verbal reasoning: vocabulary and word relationships.
- Timed mock exam: get used to deciding in seconds.
Test-day strategy
- Move fast: it is about 14 seconds per question on average, so do not linger on hard ones.
- Wonderlic advises not spending too long on any single question and not skipping around to come back later.
- On guessing, its sample instructions say it is unlikely to improve your score; if you have a best option, mark it and move on.
- Have pencil and paper if allowed, but do not depend on them.
- The invitation link usually expires in about 14 days; if it lapses, you will need to ask the company for another.
Common mistakes
- Chasing a magic score of 20, 30 or more: the current version does not give candidates a cognitive number.
- Trying to use a calculator or look up answers, which is not allowed.
- Preparing only with old examples that no longer match the current format.
- Neglecting sleep and focus: it is a test of mental pace.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions does the Wonderlic have?
The standard cognitive part has 50 questions in 12 minutes, according to Wonderlic. You are not expected to finish them all. Shorter versions exist for other uses, so confirm in your invitation.
Can you use a calculator on the Wonderlic?
No. Wonderlic says calculators are not allowed and only a few questions require calculation, so one would not help.
What is a good Wonderlic score?
Wonderlic says there is no universal good or average score and the current version does not give candidates a cognitive number. Some guides cite an average of about 20 out of 50 on the classic version, but that is a third-party figure and not your employer's criterion.
Is the Wonderlic an IQ test?
No. It measures general cognitive ability for work but does not produce an IQ. The equivalence you see online is only approximate.
How do I practice for the Wonderlic?
Wonderlic offers free sample questions in its Candidate Hub. Here you can train with free similar-style exercises and a timed mock exam focused on pace.
