How to solve: Spatial Reasoning

What this category tests

Measures spatial visualization and mental rotation — the ability to manipulate and transform 2D or 3D shapes in your head, including recognizing when something has been rotated versus mirrored.

Where this typology comes from

The landmark study here is Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler's 1971 paper in Science, which showed that the time it takes someone to mentally rotate an object scales directly with the rotation angle — solid evidence that people genuinely "rotate" a mental image rather than just recognizing it. The paper-folding and form-board question format predates that: the Minnesota Paper Form Board Test was revised into its widely used multiple-choice version by Rensis Likert and William Quasha in 1937.

How to approach it

Anchor on one distinctive feature of the shape (a notch, a corner, a colored segment) and track only that feature through the transformation, rather than trying to rotate the whole figure at once. For paper-folding items, fold one panel at a time in the order given. Explicitly check whether an option is a genuine rotation or a mirror-image reflection — reflections are the most common wrong-answer trap in this category.

Worked example

The figure shows an L-shaped tile. Which option shows this exact same tile, just rotated — not mirrored?

  • The same L-shape turned 90° clockwise ✓ Correct answer
  • The mirror image of the L-shape, flipped left-to-right
  • The L-shape stretched to twice its width
  • A T-shaped tile

Explanation Rotating a shape preserves its "handedness" — turn the L 90° clockwise and it's still the same piece, just facing a different direction. Option b looks similar at a glance, but flipping a shape left-to-right reverses its handedness, so no amount of rotation could turn the original into that mirrored version. Options c and d are different shapes entirely, not transformations of the original.
